GLENN HEIGHTS CODE ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT:

TOP 10 MOST COMMON CODE VIOLATIONS

1.     HIGH GRASS AND WEEDS: MUST BE SHORTER THAN TEN (10) INCHES. TRIM AROUND FOUNDATIONS, SIDEWALKS, CURBS, FENCES, ETC. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO MOW TO THE CURBS OR STREET EDGE. ONLY ONE NOTICE PER YEAR IS REQUIRED TO BE ISSUED. GRASS AND WEEDS OVER FOUR FEET HIGH MAY BE MOWED WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE. LOTS OVER 5 ACRES SHALL BE MOWED 200 FEET INWARD FROM STREET AND DEVELPED PROPERTY, UNLESS GROWING CROPS AND WITH AN AGRICULTURAL EXEMPTION. ONLY ONE NOTICE PER YEAR (365 DAYS) IS REQUIRED TO BE ISSUED.

2.      UNSANITARY PREMISES: KEEP LITTER, RUBBISH, GARBAGE SPILLAGES, CANS, BOTTLES, SCRAP METAL, LUMBER, APPLIANCES, HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE, TIRES, DEAD TREES, LIMBS, BRUSH, ANIMAL DROPPINGS AND OTHER SUCH ITEMS REMOVED FROM YOUR PROPERTY OUT TO ADJACENT CURBS, ALLEYS, AND STREETS. ONLY ONE NOTICE PER YEAR (365 DAYS) IS REQUIRED TO BE ISSUED.

3.      JUNKED VEHICLES: INOPERATIVE (MECHANICALLY OR LEGALLY), WRECKED, DISMANTLED OR PARTIALLY DISMANTLED MOTOR VEHICLES THAT DO NOT HAVE AN UNEXPIRED REGISTRATION OR INSPECTION STICKER LAWFULLY AFFIXEDED ARE NOT TO BE IN PUBLIC OR PRIVATE VIEW, AND MUST BE COMPLETELY ENCLOSED IN A BUILDING. JUNKED VEHICLES MAY NOT BE PLACED BEHIND FENCES, UNLESS IN CONNECTION WITH A LICENSED SALVAGE YARD, OR AS AN ANTIQUE (OVER 35 YEARS OLD) OR SPECIAL INTEREST VEHICLE. CAR COVERS DO NOT QUALIFY AS SCREENING FOR JUNKED VEHICLES.

4.      PARKING ON UNIMPROVED SURFACE: VEHICLES SHALL BE PARKED ON AN IMPROVED SURFACE. BOATS, TRAILERS, CAMPERS AND RV’S MUST BE PARKED BEHIND FRONT BUILDING LINES ON AN APPROVED SURFACE, WHICH MUST BE SIMILAR TO THE EXISTING DRIVEWAY SURFACE (NOT GRASS OR DIRT), OR BEHIND A SIX FOOT TALL MINIMUM SCREENING FENCE OR APPROVED VEGETATION SCREEN SUCH AS HEDGES, SHRUBS ETC. YOU MAY PARK ONE VEHICLE, TRAILER, RV, CAMPER, ETC IN THE REAR YARD ON AN UNIMPROVED SURFACE AS LONG AS IT IS BEHIND A SIX FOOT SCREENING FENCE. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO JUNKED VEHICLES.

5.      GARBAGE PLACED OUT ON NON COLLECTION DAYS: PLACE OUT AT CURB OR EDGE OF STREET ON TUESDAYS OR FRIDAYS IN SUPPLIED ROLLOUT BINS PLACE LARGE ITEMS OUT ON FRIDAYS. GARBAGE WILL NOT BE PICKED UP BEFORE 7:00 AM OR AFTER 8:00 PM. DAYS THAT FALL ON HOLIDAYS WILL NOT HAVE COLLECTION SERVICE, BUT WILL HAVE AT LEAST ONE (1) DAY PICKUP FOR THAT WEEK. BRUSH MAY BE PLACED OUT ON THE SECOND WEDNSDAY AND THURSDAYSDAY OF EACH MONTH. BE SURE TO BUNBLE IN LENGTHS OF FOUR FEET OR SHORTER. CONTACT PUBLIC WORKS FOR BRUSH REMOVAL.

6.       HOUSE NUMBERS: NUMBERS MUST BE PLACED ON OR NEAR THE FRONT DOOR, AND BE OF A CONTRASTING COLOR SO AS TO BE TO BE EASILY SEEN FROM THE STREET. NUMBERS ARE TO BE NEAT AND LEGIBLE. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO HOMES WITH ALLEYS, AS THE FIRE CODE REQUIRES HOUSE NUMBERS AT THE BACK ALSO. “PEEL AND STICK” NUMBERS ARE NOT ALLOWED UNDER THE FIRE CODE. NUMBERS ARE TO BE A MINIMUM OF THREE (3) INCHES HIGH. IF YOUR HOME IS PLACED A GREAT DISTANCE OFF OF THE STREET, A POST, PLATE OR OTHER SUCH PLACQUARD MAY BE PLACED NEAR THE FRONT OF YOUR PROPERTY WITH THE ADDRESS ON IT, AS WELL AS THE DWELLING. PLEASE MAKE IT EASY TO FIND YOUR HOME IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY!

7.      NO PERMIT: PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR FENCES OVER 30” HIGH, BUILDING PROJECTS, ELECTRICAL WORK, PLUMBING WORK (INCLUDING WATER HEATERS), STORAGE BUILDINGS, POOLS TWO (2) FEET DEEP OR MORE (INCLUDING ABOVE GROUND POOLS), PORTABLE SIGNS, PERMANENT SIGNS, CERTAIN TEMPORARY SIGNS, GARAGE SALES AND FOOD SERVICE ESTABLISHMENTS. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION, PLEASE CALL.

8.     STANDING WATER: ALL SOURCES THAT MAY HOLD WATER (FRESH OR STAGNANT) MAY HARBOR MOSQUITOES. ELIMINATE ANY SUCH PLACES SUCH AS CANS, TIRES, BOTTLES, PLASTIC SHEETING, LOW SPOTS IN YARDS, WATER IN POOLS, BUCKETS AND FLOWER POTS, CLOGGED GUTTERS, PET WATERING BOWLS, ETC. HELP REDUCE THE SPREAD OF WEST NILE VIRUS AND ENCEPHYLITUS.

9.     PARKING VIOLATIONS: PARKING OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES ONE TON AND OVER, RV’s, BOATS, TRAILERS, INOPERATIVE VEHICLES OR CAMPER TRAILERS ON THE STREET. BLOCKING DRIVEWAYS, CROSSWALKS, SIDEWALKS, FIRE HYDRANTS OR MAILBOXES. PARKING TOO CLOSE TO AN INTERSECTION, STOP SIGN OR CROSSWALK. DOUBLE PARKING, PARKING OVER 18” FROM A CURB, OR PARKING AGAINST THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC.

10.  SIGNS: DO NOT PLACE SIGNS IN THE RIGHT OF WAY, ON UTILITY POLES, ON OFFICIAL SIGNS, OR IN VIOLATION OF THE SIGN ORDINANCE. MOST TYPES OF SIGNS REQUIRE A PERMIT. REMOVE GARAGE SALE SIGNS WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER YOUR SALE. PLEASE CALL IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS.
